What does diplomacy have to do with sports\u2014football in particular?<\/strong> A lot, especially at the highest levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is well known that major sporting events are opportunities for meetings, networking, and business. However, this has always been limited to the individual sphere<\/em>, related to business and private relationships<\/em>. But what if this concept were applied to nations instead of just businesspeople?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an increasingly interconnected world<\/em>, sport has gradually taken on a central role<\/em>\u00a0in international diplomatic dynamics. Football<\/strong>, in particular, has a unique ability to cross and bridge cultural, linguistic, and political barriers<\/em>, becoming a privileged tool of soft power<\/em>\u2014a strategy that uses non-coercive means<\/strong>\u00a0to positively influence international relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this context, the FIFA Club World Cup<\/strong>\u00a0represents not only a global sporting event of significance<\/strong>\u00a0but also a strategic platform to project influence, build relationships, and promote development models<\/em>. This is precisely what happens, since when we talk about sports diplomacy<\/strong>, we refer to a form of interaction that uses sport as a tool to improve international relations<\/strong>\u00a0and foster mutual understanding among nations<\/em>. In fact, one might even argue that sports diplomacy builds bridges and connections where traditional diplomacy may encounter obstacles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soft power<\/strong>\u2014a concept developed by American political scientist Joseph Nye<\/em>\u2014describes a state\u2019s (or non-state actor\u2019s<\/em>) ability to attract and influence rather than coerce<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is where football becomes a vehicle of storytelling, symbolic and emotional<\/strong>, capable of generating consensus, reputation, and relational capital<\/em>. Traditionally a secondary event compared to the FIFA World Cup<\/strong>, the Club World Cup<\/strong>\u2014new in its more inclusive and, above all, wealthier structure<\/em>\u2014now reflects not only commercial and sporting interest<\/em>\u00a0but also a geopolitical vision<\/em>: more teams, more continents represented, greater media impact<\/strong>. We are talking about an event that aims to serve as a global showcase for clubs, federations, and, of course, the host country<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And while the United States hardly needs to prove its ability to host major events, it\u2019s no secret<\/strong> that hosting one of the world\u2019s richest club competitions helps strengthen global influence<\/strong>
(especially when it takes place one year before the national team World Cup, also set to be hosted in North America<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consider its potential to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– attract investment<\/strong>;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– boost tourism<\/strong>;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– promote national image<\/strong>;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the context of sports diplomacy, clubs and athletes<\/strong>\u00a0also play a key role: leading clubs from Europe, South America, and\u2014increasingly<\/em>\u2014Asia and Africa, are now global brands<\/strong>\u00a0reaching broad and diverse audiences<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the highest levels, their success and values resonate far beyond the boundaries of sport<\/strong>.
Just think of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– international partnerships<\/em>;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– summer and winter tours<\/em>;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– youth academies in emerging markets<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aren\u2019t these the clearest examples of strategic projection?<\/strong> Not to mention the athletes<\/strong>, who have become ambassadors\u2014not only for their clubs but also for peace, inclusion, and dialogue<\/em>, values already enshrined in the Olympic Charter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But how is all this conveyed on the football pitches of the Club World Cup?<\/strong> What the event stages is a competition between different football cultures<\/strong>, promoting the encounter of histories, identities, and sensibilities<\/em>\u2014a form of sports diplomacy<\/strong>, not verbal, but powerfully communicative<\/strong>. Organized football at a global level is therefore bound to produce effects that go beyond the purely sporting domain<\/strong>.
Its expansion reflects not just economic ambitions but also global interests<\/strong>. It\u2019s not easy to reflect on such topics in a historical moment filled with conflict, bloodied by wars that almost rob sport of its sense of joy and playfulness<\/em>.
