Bonamassa: sleep culture at SFS 25
Ahead of its participation in SFS 25, Bonamassa Sleep & Performance brings the culture of sleep not as mere rest, but as a scientific tool of Performance to the center of discussion. Through the interview, we learn how the company is transforming the muscle and neurological recovery of athletes through the 5P® Method and Sleep Kit®, offering highly personalized Sleep Periodization® and Sleep Prescription® protocols. An approach that not only prevents injury and lengthens careers, but optimizes mental clarity and reaction speed, positioning “strategic sleep” as the new pillar of sustainability and excellence in sport.
Rest is an integral part of training. What are the key innovations your mattresses offer to scientifically accelerate athletes’ muscle and neurological recovery while helping to prevent long-term injuries, a pillar of sports career sustainability?
“We are actually not talking about mattresses, but about Sleep Performance tools. Bonamassa Sleep & Performance has developed an integrated scientific approach-the 5P® Method (Knowledge, Objective Analysis, Subjective Analysis, Bed System, Environment) -that transforms sleep into a coachable variable on par with strength and endurance. Key innovations include the Sleep Kit®, a modular platform that integrates topper, pillow, mask, and plugs, as well as objective monitoring tools (sleep readiness, HRV, recovery index) and customized sleep training protocols based on circadian rhythms, training load, and the athlete’s chronotype. The goal is to optimize the neuromuscular and cognitive recovery window, reducing the risk of overtraining injuries and promoting sports longevity through scientific rest management.”

In addition to the physical, high-level performance depends on mental clarity. How does the quality of rest provided by your solutions directly affect the athlete’s cognitive abilities-such as reaction speed and stress management-crucial during competition?
“Deep sleep and REM sleep represent two strategic neurofunctional phases for performance: the former for physical and hormonal recovery, the latter for procedural memory, concentration, and emotional management. Through the combined analysis of objective parameters (EEG, HRV, REM latency) and subjective assessments (fatigue score, sleep perception), Bonamassa Sleep & Performance builds personalized Sleep Readiness® profiles, enabling technical staffs to anticipate cognitive decline and plan training or competitions in windows of maximum neuropsychological efficiency. In this sense, sleep becomes a tool for mental lucidity and adaptation, essential for decision making, reaction and stress control under pressure.”
The body of a marathon runner has different needs than that of a weightlifter. Does Bonamassa offer protocols or systems for customizing rest that take into account the sport played, the phase of training (loading vs. unloading) and the specific physiological needs of the athlete?
“Yes. Each sport discipline requires a specific sleep profile, just as each human being is a unique being. Bonamassa Sleep & Performance adopts Sleep Periodization® protocols, which modulate sleep quantity, timing, and quality in relation to the type of sport, stage of the season, and neuromuscular load. For example, in endurance sports, work is done on maintaining circadian continuity and preventing fragmented sleep, while in power or high-intensity sports, emphasis is placed on central nervous system recovery and nighttime hormonal synchronization. Each athlete receives a personalized Sleep Prescription®, validated through continuous monitoring tools and accompanied by interventions on environment and pre-sleep behaviors, this is true sleep management.”

You will be present at SFS 25, an event that combines innovation and sustainable systems. What are the main goals of your involvement and what partnerships or synergies do you hope to establish to spread the message that ‘strategic sleep’ is the new front for performance and sustainability?
“Our goal is to bring sleep into the performance culture. At SFS25 we are presenting the Sleep & Performance in Football project, which integrates training, applied research and monitoring technologies dedicated to clubs, staff and athletes. We want to build synergies with clubs, federations, and technology partners that share a sustainable vision of a sports career, in which recovery is no longer seen as a pause, but as an active part of training and prevention. For us, “Sleep is a Performance Skill”-a new parameter of biological, mental and managerial sustainability of sports talent.”
